What exactly is Eczema?
Eczema is a broad term sometimes also called "atopic dermatitis; used interchangeably to describe dry skin related conditions, normally characterized by an itchy rash that often becomes inflamed, exhibiting irritating symptoms such as redness, swelling, and sometimes pain and burning. Most believe it is only the external environment that causes this rash, but guess what it can be triggered by internal autoimmune responses as well; will talk about that more at a later date. For now we'd like to expand more on the external causes such as "irritants". Irritants are just that, things that are uncomfortable, irritate the skin, can be annoying, and also makes you feel uncomfortable. These things can include but are not limited to dyes, perfumes, laundry detergents, shampoo, soaps, cleansers, and even certain foods. It is best to keep a diary of the things that irritate your skin, so that you know to avoid them when you can in the near future; now that we know what eczema is and some of the causes, lets talk about the areas of the body Eczema can affect.
Which areas of the body does Eczema affect?
Eczema is commonly found in/on areas of the skin where there are creases/folds such as the inside of elbows, behind the knees, folds of the neck, in between the webs of our fingers and sometimes commonly on the scalp of children; please keep in mind this type of rash can be formed anywhere on the skin, those are just some of the most common areas.
What is the key when trying to manage Eczema during a flare up?
There are so many companies out here who sell all these fancy products that are HIGHLY priced with what supposed to be MAGIC in a bottle or jar, that is supposed to work wonders when it comes to managing Eczema-well guess what? were here to tell you there are MANY steps you can take at home before you head out to the drug store or take prescription medication to manage at home; especially being that children's skin is so sensitive.
Here are a few tips to manage at home with the key tip being to stay MOISTURIZED.
1. Keep a diary of foods/items that has caused you Eczema flare-ups in the past and do your best to avoid them.
2. Avoid hot baths/showers.
3.STAY MOISTURIZED.
